“Safe.” Repeating the word slowly, like his tongue had grown all hard and swollen from too much beer, Shane blinked, over and over, stared off past the other and into the campsite. He passed his hand over his face, as if he was tryin’ to rub the bullshit off from him and just rid himself of this dumb mentality of thinkin’.
“Riiight. Safe.” Shane rolled his eyes. “Sooner or later the Walkers will come, and all we’ve done is prepare them for an easy brunch.” The world had all gone to hell and taken over by undead cannibals that ran like herds, an’ there his best friend, his competition, his leader was, sittin’ there contemplatin’ the good life over cracker jacks and tea.
"You got somethin’, any news or some kinda plan you wanna share? Otherwise, I gotta get back to work."
It was almost as if Shane refused to believe they had actually found somewhere they could potentially life for a while - maybe, if they were lucky, they’d be able to make it a real home, stay there for the rest of their lives. Rick wanted a place like that, he wanted a place they could be separated from the rest of the world, a place where they wouldn’t have to worry about being killed by both humans and the remains of humans.

"Don’t speak like that,” he warned him, the smile soon fading from his face. He couldn’t afford to have the rest of the group hear him talk like that, not when they were finally at their resting place, a happy place. It had been a while since he’d seen everyone smile like they did. Lori and Carl were happy, that’s all that mattered. “We can make this place a home. We can survive here.”
This time he grabbed at his arm, attempting to stop him. “You should rest. I’ll finish up.”
