Why would the ever-loving Jess Grimes leave —- - or deathly avoid him as much as she did? —- - it was because of jealousy. The sickening feeling of having to create her own life outside of the fact that she loved, cared, and respected her brother. She would’ve followed him anywhere and everywhere. But when the moment came and Jess let Rick create his own family — - which of course, did not include her — - she left. It saved her the pain of having to watch him drift away from her. Jess decided it was better for her to let go. Rick was better without her, but she wasn’t better off without him.
A loving smile formed on her lips, hearing the emotion in his voice, sending chills to her spine. It was heartbreaking. It was actual torture that she had to live through a good few years without a family to call; to have nobody reassure you on sleepless nights, squeezing the shit out of the gun, trying so hard not to pull the trigger on herself. But that’s the thing about Jessica Grimes —- - she never loses hope. She never lost her hope on her brother.
” Ma an’ Pa would be cryin’ their faces off if they saw you an’ me right now. “ It wasn’t probably the most comforting thing to say, but the moment Jess locked eyes with her brother once more, she could feel the tears roll down her cheeks. The grown woman should try to keep it together, but she can’t.. " I finally found you. ”
Having his sister back made things seem somewhat normal, if that was even possible. He had never really understood why she had left that day, why she had walked away when he had needed her the most. He was starting his life and he had been afraid, if she had been there to support him, it would have made starting his new life a whole lot easier. Instead she walked away, she occasionally looked back, but she never fully came back to him and for a while, it left a hole in the world. None of it mattered anymore, there was no point in hanging onto the past - this was the world now, they weren’t the people they had been before, Rick knew that better than anyone.
He was thankful that it was now when she had found him, when he had found her. He wouldn’t have wanted her to be around during the campsite, what if it had been her that died instead of Amy? What if they had been the siblings that were torn from each other? The farm wasn’t safe either, Shane would have most likely targeted her that day on the hill, the one person he knew would truly destroy Rick. The prison was safe, the prison was a place they could live in peace.
He chuckled at the thought, they had probably been rooting for the two of them from above - that’s where he assumed they were, they couldn’t have survived, not at their age. "You ever hear from them?” He kind of hoped she had maybe received a phone call when everything had started, that they made sure she was doing okay, that she was still alive - that was if they had been able to get to the phone in time. Rick wiped at the tears and nudged at her shoulder. “Come on, the others will be happy to see you.”
