When siblings reunite for the first time, it was either a fairy tale or one of those soap operas their parents used to watch every Sunday morning —- - but the Grimes siblings were out in the open, embracing as walkers —- - the reanimated corpses —- - would maybe just… appear out of the blue and steal them away from each other. Jess was starting to be protective over her brother. She wanted him to be safe and have the good life that he deserved and always wanted. This would be compensation for the years on which she had been away, studying in Med School —- - Jess wanted to become a doctor, and the woman couldn’t even remember if she had told Rick about it or not.
“ Ma —- - the last time I saw her… " And Jess left it at that. It was better than to elaborate every damn thing that’s happened to her, and it was a lot, apparently. Seeing Rick had only added up to the few reasons why Jess did her absolute best to —- - to stay on her ground. " —- - … maybe some other time, when we ain’t be cryin’ over spilled milk. " The topic was best to be avoided, at least. Not in this place. Not now. There might be a heard coming up, and sanctuary was important.
Feeling the pads of his fingertips touch her skin, Jess couldn’t help but to have a slight grin on her face, cheering up almost immediately. It was always like this. They didn’t want to dwell on the past. Only the present —- - occasionally the future. " You have a camp —- - where? I’ve searched the perimeter, and all I’ve come across is a shitty drugstore an’ some douchebags, " It was a hard time for a female to survive alone in a mad man’s world, and Jess didn’t want to bring up the fact that —— - that she had killed a man whom sexually assaulted her. She didn’t want to rattle Rick about it… —- - things were okay now.
Now all Rick wanted to do was get back to the prison, out of the way of danger. Every moment they were out in the open, something dangerous lurked around the corner. Any moment now, they could be separated again, and that’s not something Rick wanted to happen, not when he’d just got her back. Much like he had been protective back when they were young, when the people in her class picked on her and he would make sure they never did so again - sometimes he wouldn’t always win, sometimes they would kick the living crap out of him, but that didn’t matter to him, he would always get back up and try again. His sister’s safety used to be the only thing that mattered to him, she was the only reason he ever got into trouble, but he didn’t mind it one bit.
He hadn’t expected any less. He had known his parents wouldn’t have made it, that they would have been the first people to be taken down. They were good people, they would have known that their time had arrived, that even if they did try surviving they wouldn’t have long anyway. Rick wasn’t as sad as most people would expect him to be, he could only hope that they died peacefully and t o g e t h e r. ❝ You’re right, this ain’t the place to talk about this. ❞
The fact she suddenly assumed it was a camp made him chuckle, if only she knew. Their four walls weren’t quite like the four walls most survivors survived behind. He headed away from the pile of walkers alongside her, he didn’t want to spend any more time there, not when they could be someplace better. The prison was hidden behind trees, was away from the rest of the town that resided on the outskirts. There was no way she would have come across it. ❝ Something like that, yeah. It’s away from here, we made sure we found somewhere hidden. ❞ Soon, she would see what he meant.
