A dreamlike state came over Beth. She was not in pain, she could not feel the wound, she was just… sleepy. Her soft eyes met Rick’s and she sent him a gentle smile on her pale face. “Take care Judith…” Beth said wanting the young girl to live. “Tell Maggie I love her…” The young girl stated, a single tear falling from her eye.
“And Rick…” Beth said reaching up, her thumb rubbing along his cheek, leaving some blood there. “Never give up hope…” It was like she was saying her last words even though she didn’t want to die.
He watched as her eyes were almost unable to remain open, as she lay limp on the ground. He would make sure she went peacefully, make sure she wasn’t alone when she passed away. He at least owed her that much. Rick stared up at the nighttime sky and drew a deep breath before opening his mouth to speak. “You’re gonna tell them yourself.”
He could feel the wet of her blood on his cheek, knew that the blood was all that would remain after she was gone. “I won’t,” he whispered, an obvious lie. He’d given up hope a long time ago.
